In short, Super Rugged computers are designed for the harshest edge environments, where exposure to shock, vibration, debris, and wide temperature swings is routine. Many of these systems will typically feature:  

  • Completely fanless and cableless designs
  • Wide operating temperature ranges (often -25°C to 70°C or wider)
  • Fully sealed enclosures for dust and water protection
  • High shock and vibration resistance (MIL-STD-810G compliance)
  • Expansion for performance at the edge, like AI accelerators, NVMe storage, or wireless modules

On the other hand, Semi Rugged computers are ideal for controlled industrial environments where performance and durability are still critical, but the conditions aren’t as extreme. These systems offer: 

  • Compact, fanless designs (may have cables)
  • Moderate temperature tolerance (typically 0°C to 50°C)
  • Essential, fixed I/O for industrial automation

BCO and RCO Series: Industrial Workstations for Edge Computing

Premio’s BCO and RCO Series are edge computers that serve the same purpose: drive real-time processing and consolidate IoT devices. Both are designed to tackle edge applications in their own unique way and exemplify the Super Rugged and Semi Rugged design.  

The BCO Series follows an industrial edge/semi rugged design concept, delivering cost-effectiveness and simplicity for industrial applications. Meanwhile, the RCO Series is tailored with rugged edge/super rugged designs, emphasizing extreme durability and deployment flexibility through EDGEBoost technologies for more challenging industrial applications.

Both the BCO and RCO Series, excluding a GPU Integrated BCO-6000 Series & RCO-6000 Series, follow a completely fanless design for enhanced durability and reliability. A key differentiator between the two is that the BCO Series leverages an industrial 3.5” SBC or mini-ITX motherboard that is housed within a hardened chassis, while the RCO Series is designed by Premio with a proprietary motherboard and chassis. The RCO can withstand much wider operating temperatures than the BCO due to its fully ruggedized design, whereas the BCO has a much simpler industrial design.   

Due to the design concept of the BCO, many of its I/O is pulled out through cables whereas the connectivity on the RCO is implemented all on-board for a flush cableless design. In extreme edge deployments, cables become a point of failure due to possible detachment or malfunctions. Although rare, this does pose a vulnerability and has been mitigated within the RCO Series. 

In addition, the RCO Series provides a slightly wider power input range and offers on-board power protection. In mission-critical deployments where dirty power is present, power protection is essential to safeguard the integrity of the industrial computer.

Unlike consumer-grade desktops, the BCO and RCO Series provide IoT-centric I/O on-board to ensure both compatibility and availability for different deployment use cases. Multiple LAN ports, GPIO or DIO, and even legacy COM ports come standard in these edge computers to drive connectivity for various industrial switches and IoT devices.
