RCO-1000 Product Family Transition: Why Move from Elkhart Lake to Amston Lake?

The RCO-1000 Series is one of Premio's flagship product families, designed to deliver ultra-compact computing with super-rugged capabilities for demanding industrial environments. Featuring a fanless and cableless design, wide operating temperature support, and industrial-grade reliability, the RCO-1000 Series has been widely adopted across applications such as industrial automation, transportation, smart city infrastructure, and edge AI deployments.

To continue meeting the evolving requirements of edge computing, Premio is excited to introduce the new RCO-1000-ASL Series in June 2026. Powered by Intel® Amston Lake processors, the RCO-1000-ASL Series builds upon the proven foundation of the previous RCO-1000-EHL Series while delivering improvements in performance, efficiency, connectivity, and remote management capabilities.

In this article, we'll explore the key differences between the new RCO-1000-ASL Series and the previous RCO-1000-EHL Series, and discuss how these enhancements help organizations deploy more capable and future-ready edge computing solutions.

More Performance, Lower Power Consumption

One of the biggest advantages of the RCO-1000-ASL Series is the transition from Intel® Elkhart Lake to Intel® Amston Lake processors. With up to 91% higher processing performance, the new platform delivers substantially more computing power while maintaining the low-power efficiency required for industrial edge deployments.

This improvement allows organizations to support more demanding applications without increasing power consumption or moving to a larger platform. Below is a comparison between the previous RCO-1000-EHL Series and the new RCO-1000-ASL Series:

For machine vision, industrial automation, robotics, and edge AI applications, this performance improvement translates into:

  • Faster data processing
  • Improved system responsiveness
  • Better multitasking capabilities
  • Greater scalability for future workloads

Just as importantly, the RCO-1000-ASL Series maintains a low-power design, helping reduce operating costs, simplify thermal management, and improve long-term reliability in fanless industrial environments.

Faster Data Handling with DDR5 Memory

In addition to the processor upgrade, the RCO-1000-ASL Series transitions from DDR4 to DDR5 memory, providing higher memory bandwidth and improved system responsiveness.

This enhancement is particularly beneficial for modern edge applications that process large amounts of data, including machine vision, AI inference, sensor fusion, and real-time analytics. By reducing potential memory bottlenecks, DDR5 helps systems handle data more efficiently and maintain smooth performance under demanding workloads.

Built for the Next Generation of Connected Edge Devices

In addition to performance improvements, the RCO-1000-ASL Series introduces enhanced connectivity to support modern edge deployments.

2× 2.5GbE

Wireless Expansion

M.2 B-Key + Full-size Mini PCIe

The addition of dual 2.5GbE LAN ports provides more network bandwidth for faster data transfer and improved communication between connected devices. The new M.2 E-Key also enables dedicated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth expansion, giving customers greater flexibility when deploying connected edge systems.

While the RCO-1000-ASL introduces several connectivity enhancements, both the RCO-1000-EHL and RCO-1000-ASL Series continue to deliver the rich I/O flexibility that customers expect from the RCO-1000 family. Standard USB, COM, and LAN interfaces provide broad compatibility with industrial devices and peripherals.

In addition, both series support Premio's EDGEBoost I/O expansion technology, enabling customers to tailor system I/O based on application requirements. Available expansion options include USB, COM, DIO + DP, and DIO + HDMI modules, allowing customers to customize system I/O for specific application requirements.

New Remote Management Capabilities

One of the most significant additions to the RCO-1000-ASL Series is support for remote management. The new RCO-1000-ASL-20-OOB model features a dedicated RJ45 port for remote management connectivity, enabling administrators to remotely access, recover, and control edge systems without requiring onsite service.

The RCO-1000-ASL-20-OOB supports Premio EDGEBoost OOB, Premio's hardware-level Out-of-Band (OOB) remote management solution. Operating independently from the operating system, EDGEBoost OOB allows administrators to remotely power cycle systems, access the BIOS, monitor power status, and recover devices even when the operating system becomes unresponsive.

For customers requiring centralized fleet management capabilities, the RCO-1000-ASL-20-OOB also supports Allxon, Premio's strategic remote management partner. In addition to Out-of-Band recovery functions, Allxon provides In-Band management features such as device monitoring, alerts and notifications, OTA updates, software watchdog, and fleet provisioning to help simplify large-scale edge deployments.

Depending on deployment requirements, customers can choose Premio EDGEBoost OOB for hardware-level remote recovery without recurring subscription fees, or leverage Allxon's subscription-based platform for advanced fleet management and device monitoring capabilities.

For distributed edge deployments, remote management helps reduce downtime, minimize onsite service visits, and improve operational visibility across connected infrastructure.

Compact Form Factor Comparison: RCO-1000-EHL-10 vs. RCO-1000-ASL-10

One of the biggest advantages of transitioning to the RCO-1000-ASL-10 is that customers can upgrade to a next-generation edge computing platform without significantly changing their existing installation space. The RCO-1000-ASL-10 maintains the same 150 × 105 mm footprint as the RCO-1000-EHL-10, with only a 7 mm increase in height from 49 mm to 56 mm.

RCO-1000-ASL Series Key Highlights
