Optimizing Edge AI Computing with Energy-efficient Design and Scalability: NVIDIA Jetson Computers

What is Jetson? Key design uniqueness?

NVIDIA Jetson modules are a family of embedded computing platforms designed to bring accelerated AI computing to edge devices. These modules are compact, energy-efficient, and equipped with powerful GPUs designed specifically for running AI and machine learning workloads. The Jetson platform is widely used in applications such as robotics, drones, autonomous vehicles, smart cameras, and various other edge devices.

Why did NVIDIA develop Jetson and why Jetson is important?

NVIDIA develops Jetson modules to address the increasing demand for edge computing solutions with AI capabilities. Here are key reasons why NVIDIA invests in the development of Jetson modules:

  • Edge Computing Trend: With the proliferation of IoT (Internet of Things) devices and the trend toward edge computing, there's a growing need for embedded systems that can process data locally. Jetson modules offer the parallel computing ability to perform AI inference at the edge, enabling devices to make real-time decisions without having to rely on cloud-based processing.
  • AI and Machine Learning Acceleration: With the advent of Deep Learning technology, AI and Machine Learning have started to play a significant role in today's society. Jetson modules are optimized for AI and ML workloads, featuring powerful GPUs on the module with CUDA cores designed to accelerate neural network computations. This enables edge devices to perform complex tasks like image recognition, natural language processing, and object detection efficiently.
  • Compact and Energy-Efficient Design: Customers were previously searching for Edge AI computing solutions from Intel. The X86 industrial computers with Intel processors and NVIDIA GPUs were powerful enough for AI computing. However, these industrial computers were limited in terms of compactness and power efficiency, often requiring fans and large space in machines for GPU and having high power consumption. As a result, their applications were limited in harsh industrial environments. Jetson has since emerged as a more suitable solution. Jetson modules are designed to solve these problems, with a compact size and energy-efficient performance, they are suitable for deployment in devices with space and power constraints. The power consumption of Jetson modules is highly less than that of NVIDIA GPUs, with a maximum of 60W in Jetson AGX Orin compared to regular GPUs with a minimum of 50W TDP, making Jetson modules suitable in a fanless design system for thermal management. With a rugged chassis and fanless design, NVIDIA Jetson modules are deployment-ready for harsh environments.
  • Developer-Friendly Ecosystem: NVIDIA has invested heavily in the technology behind its GPUs since its inception. They have focused on groundbreaking technologies such as CUDA, Deep Learning Super Sampling, and Ray Tracing. NVIDIA provides a comprehensive software development kit (SDK) and libraries for Jetson modules, along with support for popular AI frameworks. This ecosystem is developer-friendly and makes it easier for software developers to create and optimize AI applications for Jetson-powered devices.
