Modernizing Water Facility Operations with Industrial-Grade Touchscreen Computers

Water treatment facilities are crucial because they ensure the safety and quality of drinking water, protect public health by preventing waterborne diseases, and minimize environmental impact by reducing pollution. They are essential for making water suitable for human consumption and various other uses, and for safeguarding ecosystems from harmful pollutants. To provide facility personnel with user-friendly and reliable ways to monitor and control operations, a U.S.-based integrator has partnered with Premio to deploy  VIO Series industrial-grade touchscreen computers tailored for high-performance, real-time monitoring—bringing enhanced reliability, operational flexibility, and long-term scalability to its many projects around the country.

Challenges

  • Needed to find a hardware partner with a high performing and reliable HMI to be sold as a standard product
  • Reliable touch/display interface in all sorts of lighting conditions
  • Old HMIs were basic with no situational awareness
  • Long life product support

Solution

Benefits

  • No MOQ on standard off-the-shelf products, allowing our customers to go to market quickly
  • Strong application engineering team to assist with a variety of unique deployments

Company background

This U.S.-based firm was founded by experienced professionals in the water and wastewater industry, with a mission to support end users in optimizing their water treatment operations. With decades of industry expertise, the company provides trusted, forward-looking solutions that help facilities operate efficiently, remain compliant with regulations, and prepare for future demands. Focused on collaboration, the firm works closely with clients to define clear operational goals—whether building scalable treatment plants or enhancing existing systems for improved performance. Each solution is tailored to meet specific project requirements, ensuring sustainable, reliable results that align with long-term objectives.

The Challenges

Lack of a Standardized, Reliable HMI Partner

Previous HMIs were consumer grade and sourced from multiple vendors. Having to manage different SKUs not only complicates the supply chain but also makes technical support for their end user more difficult.

Reliable Touch/Display Interface

Consumer grade HMIs tend to have high failure rates in industrial settings. An IP rated purpose-built HMI was deemed to be the only way to reduce operational down-time.

Basic HMIs with No Situational Awareness

Legacy systems have minimal data visualization and no real-time insights. This leads to delayed responses during mission-critical operations.

Long Life Product Support

Consumer grade HMIs tend to have short product life support. This is especially cumbersome for industrial applications since having to revalidate new hardware increases costs, as well as delaying project timelines.

Premio’s VIO Series IP65-rated Rugged Industrial Touchscreen Computers

Premio’s VIO Series (VIO-W215-PC100-EHL) is a rugged, industrial panel PC built to be deployed in harsh environments thanks to the IP65 rated front panel and -20C to 60C operating temperature range. Powered by an Intel® Celeron® J6413 processor, the system includes a variety of I/O to help communicate with different equipment/communication protocols. Furthermore, it is UL listed to meet industrial safety and compliance standards.

Superior Touch and Display

The VIO-W215-PC100-EHL’s touch panel offers 10 point PCAP touch and up to 1,000-nit Full HD resolution. Combined with 7H hardness and IK07 impact resistance, the VIO can reliably operate in any water treatment site environment.

Ignition EDGE Ready

The VIO serieshas been self-validated to be Ignition Edge Ready. While not the full Ignition SCADA platform, Ignition Edge is a popular lightweight version that still supports data collection, local visualization and MQTT transmission without the need of a full server.

Intel Embedded Line and Long-Life Supported Components

All of Premio’s products use processors from Intel’s embedded product line, which will be supported for up to 10 years dependent on where we are in the lifecycle (compared to 3-5 years on the consumer line). The rest of the HMI components as well have been purposefully sourced to have long-life product support.

The Benefits

No MOQ Restriction for Standard Products

By offering standard off-the-shelf products with no MOQs, it benefits customers that are on a more project-based schedule. Typically, project-based customers face unpredictable timelines, and if MOQ is required, inventory carrying costs can negatively affect operating costs. For customers wanting to transition into Industry 4.0 with new hardware, this procurement flexibility can be as critical as the technical specifications of the hardware itself.

Strong Application Engineering Team

Premio’s field application team is always on stand-by to assist with all sorts of unique deployment scenarios. However, even before the final production units are shipped out, Premio’s team will pre-load and test each device to mitigate any chances of product failure on-site.

Conclusion

By choosing to partner with Premio, the customer has successfully been using the VIO as part of their standard offerings. The rugged and Ignition ready design of the VIO-W215-PC100-EHL provided the reliability and high performance touchscreen needed for water treatment site professionals. With no MOQ restrictions and a strong engineering support team, it has allowed the customer to go to market faster
